Development of a wide-field EMCCD camera-based alpha-particle imaging system

We demonstrate a wide-field alpha-particle imaging system based on the detection of alpha-induced scintillation light from ZnS:Ag screen using an EMCCD camera. develop efficient image processing algorithm to remove cosmic and thermal noise locate alpha particle interactions in images. This is particularly suited low-activity samples where long acquisition periods entail large number frames with no detected particle. Our has relative counting efficiency ?50 % compared PMT-based counter. It can detect particles at resolution <480 µm over area ?45 × 45 mm. performance this by granite sample. Correlation between resulting micro XRF-determined element map demonstrates that most activity our sample held dark-coloured Ba-rich veins inclusions mineral grain boundaries.
